As Above, So Below (2014) [Movie Review]

Does the world need another Christian-based, found-footage, sub-par horror film? No! But since this is a horror film, it will make at the very least twice it's budget.

But you're not here to read my rant about what is wrong with horror, you're here to read about what is wrong with As Above, So Below.

To start, I should probably mention that this film is a double-whammy of the few things in cinema that I dislike. Found-footage and horror. Don't get me wrong, there are some times in which either of the two can turn out to be great, however I don't believe I could say this film is an exception.

The film is simply a mess with it's poor writing. A large chunk of the dialogue is so poorly written it was comedic. At least half of the theater was laughing when they were supposed to be gasping. This is a bad sign for any genre.

The characters in this film were less than fantastic. They were all static and the only character that showed passion was the main character. I think this is due to poor writing, but it could also be the actors not having the passion to make the roles better.

However, the concept of the film was great. Searching for the legendary philosopher's stone while entering through the gates of Hell was interesting. I wish that the film hadn't failed at virtually every other category, this could have been great.

I can only recommend this film to die-hard horror fans. And even then, I wouldn't recommend it.

Rating: 55/100
