The F Word, known to most moviegoers in the US and UK as
What If,
finds a pessimistic Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) instantly falling in
love with Chantry (Zoe Kazan). The two meet at a party and spend the
entire night talking, then they happen to walk home in the same
direction and as such talk some more. Enthralled by the night he had
with Chantry, he asks if it would be possible to talk again in the
future, to which Chantry instantly gives Wallace her phone number. As
she walks away, she utters a phrase that sends Wallace right back into
his pessimistic mindset, "I don't usually stay out this late, my
boyfriend is probably worried about me." Wallace ultimately decides that
he is content with just being friends, we then face the age-old
question of "Can a man and woman be
just friends?"
A couple things that are worth noting about this film is that it
really doesn't do anything to change the genre nor does it add anything
to it. Even so, the film is so wonderfully put together that it's
difficult not to enjoy the film. Everyone has been in the position these
two are in, so it's easy to relate to the characters. It was funny and a
generally well-done film. Surprisingly enough, this is one of my
favorite films of the year. Like I said, it does nothing special, yet it
was a wonderful film.
I would give this film a high recommendation.
