Dolphin Tale 2 (2014) [Movie Review]

I will preface this review by stating that I have not seen the first Dolphin Tale. Hell, to be completely honest, I didn't even know it existed until about 3 weeks ago. And as soon as I saw that movie poster displayed at the theater, I knew that one day, I would dreadfully be watching the film.

There is a tagline on the movie poster "Winter's amazing true story... now has HOPE." I didn't exactly notice that tagline until after I had seen the movie. But I don't see how that tagline was supposed to be used to sell the movie. At first glance, it's saying that the first film had no hope of being successful, but this one would be. I know that it was a play on the new dolphin's name, "Hope," but it just seems like such a poor tagline.
Anyway, I have not seen the original. I did, however, read a little about it. I don't think I need to watch the first one now. I initially thought of it as a film that didn't need to be made, and of course then thought of this sequel as the same thing. However, after my readings, I discovered that these movies are primarily being made to advertise the non-profit Clearwater Marine Aquarium. So, now they have a little of my support.

Anyway, this film opens, and closes, with a narration from the main character, Sawyer (Nathan Gamble), about dolphins and whether or not they feel emotions, the narration seems cheesy and unnecessary. The film then goes on to show the team rescuing a beached dolphin and giving some nice background information about the team at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The film does a great job at presenting all of the information needed to understand the film, even without watching the first. It is possible that fans of the first may find this annoying, but I would hazard that most would actually enjoy it, as it will be a nice a refresher for them.

Some of the dialogue in this film is cringe-worthy. Hell, some of the cringe-worthy dialogue was in the trailer. But the film is a family-friendly film, which is exactly how it is marketed. The children will laugh on cue and learn a little bit while enjoying the film. The adults won't love the film nearly as much as the kids, but should find themselves at least fairly enjoying it.

Rating: 71/100
