I have a hard time beginning almost every review I write. But this one - this one I knew exactly how to start it. With a sigh. Because, to me, that's what this film boils down to. A bunch of sighs.
It was made perfectly clear through the trailer - and name - of this film exactly what it was about. (A storm, for the slower readers). What was not made clear, in the slightest, was the fact that it was a found-footage/first person style film. A poorly executed one at that.
Oh, I almost forgot. This film is a documentary.
Yeah, what you're watching is the "finished" product of the documentary the storm chasers have created. Which, by the way, means that there is no possible way you are watching some of the shots you see. It is made explicitly clear that their footage is not being sent to any sort of network, it's all exclusively on the hard drives of the cameras. Yet, we see footage from a camera that is incinerated and a few that were completely crushed.
And to top off the featuring footage that they don't have - half of the movie is about a handful of high school students' time capsule messages. Some of the most clichéd high school, too! The movie was just a mess with it trying to feature rednecks, storm chasers, redneck storm chasers, and high school students - and every time I remember that it was supposed to be the film the storm chasers released just makes me wonder how anybody thought half of the things that happened in this film were a good idea.
I can't think of anything good to say about this film. I guess the fact that I did fairly enjoy the movie is a good thing, but I cannot recommend spending money on the film. The performances from every actor and actress made me think I was watching a televised soap opera, the only thing that was missing was the dramatic.... PAUSE . Actually, there probably was one that I didn't catch.
Just don't waste your money on this movie. There was a similar movie made in 1996, though, that I would recommend.
