As always, I will try to remain spoiler-free in my review.
The film opens to neanderthal drinking from a lake as there is a narration of life and evolution. This quickly transitions to our main character, Lucy, outside of large building as her boyfriend convinces her to bring a mysterious briefcase inside. While inside, she is kidnapped by a mob boss and forced to smuggle drugs into a foreign country. After an accident causes the drugs to leak into her body, she is able to tap into more of her brain power. I will stress again that this is science fiction. As she begins using more of her brain, she begins to have unhumanilke abilities.
This film features seemingly random cuts to different animals doing things. They seem random at first, but you will eventually notice that they are symbolic to what is happening to Lucy. Another interesting thing to note is the constant display of what percentage of her brain is being used. This display not only shows us the progress Lucy as a character is making, but it also does a fine job showing the audience how close the film is to being over. It's not a perfect line-up, but the film more-or-less is over when Lucy reaches her 100%.
I found this film to be both entertaining and surprisingly thought-provoking. Led by a stellar cast and a great director, I would recommend this film.
