Snowpiercer (2013) [Movie Review]

Global warming has become an issue that can no longer be avoided. In an effort to combat the warming climate, scientists invent a machine to theoretically cool the Earth. The machine is unfortunately more powerful than anticipated, causing a near-instant Ice Age, exterminating almost all of the human race. The only survivors are those lucky enough to have boarded the Snowpiercer, a train designed to sustain life and protect it's inhabitants from the frigid temperatures of the outside.

On this train, there is a class system. In the front most car, the engine, lives the conductor and creator of the train. He also serves as a holy figure for the passengers, and their leader. As we go further back, the privileges become less and less for the passengers. When we finally reach the tail section of the train, we find the oppressed people. The tail section are abused and often used as slaves for various purposes for the front passengers. There have been rebellions that have tried and failed to overthrow the corrupt system in the past, but this new rebellion believes their plan is flawless.

Chris Evans stars as Curtis, who is more-or-less the leader of the coming rebellion. He has proved to me time and time again that he is a talented actor and has now proved to me that he is even greater than I had previously imagined! He captured his role, making the audience feel sympathetic towards his character. All of the actors and actresses were great in this film. Perfectly cast and they all made the film more enjoyable.

This film was just over two hours long, however it certainly does not feel so long. The tense pauses of the characters calculating their next move, usually followed immediately by over-the-top fight scenes make for a highly entertaining film.

There are a few scenes that feature unnecessary additions that make it difficult to tell whether or not the director was attempting to make a joke, but I will the director the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Overall, I would highly recommend watching Snowpiercer if any of you get the chance!
