This film hits hard on one of the core aspects of the Spider-Man character, his love life. This isn't to say that other superheroes don't have similar struggles, but Spider-Man's has always, to me, been the most powerful story. How can Peter live with himself if the person he loves is put in harms way just for being with Peter? Especially after certain events that transpire throughout his life.
For that very reason, Spider-Man is in my top 5 favorite superheroes, and Andrew Garfield plays the perfect Spider-Man. And speaking of Garfield's perfect portrayal, Emma Stone was also perfect in her portrayal of Gwen Stacy. The other characters seemed to be slightly different than their comic counterparts, but were never less than amazing.
To move past the fantastic acting and portrayals, I need to take a minute to commend the visuals. The film perfectly blends it's comic book style with real world visuals, and it looks simply fantastic. I will concede that certain moments had a cheap visual feel to them, but the overall product was superb.
I also feel the need to give the writers a round of applause for writing their own story, and not simply creating a live-action version of a comic book. I said a similar thing about the first in this series, and this one seemed to go a little further from their source material. This isn't to say that the writing is better or worse than the comics, it seemed to stay right on par with the how the comics were done. And they have me anxiously awaiting the sequel.
The only thing that somewhat annoyed me about this movie was it's mid-credits scene. The scene has literally nothing to do with Spider-Man, but it does have me intrigued as to what could happen in the future.
