Belle (2013) [Movie Review]

The mulatto daughter of a Royal Navy Officer and a slave is raised by her great uncle, a Chief Justice. While she grows, Dido Elizabeth Belle is loved but receives a much different treatment than her white cousin receives. This film chronicles the life of Dido, while also educating the world of the infamous Zong massacre court case.

As with most other 'based on true stories', I know little of the true story. I cannot say whether or not these events were portrayed accurately, and in all honesty, I don't think any other person could either.

There really is not much to be said about Belle. It narrates it's story quite well, features a wonderful cast of big names as well as smaller names. The sets look great, especially considering this films undoubtedly low budget. (Fox Searchlight films never get high budgets). I can think of no major flaws, but there are numerous small ones.

Rating: 8/10
