Melancholia (2011) [Movie Review]

I have now finished Lars von Trier's Depression Trilogy. It is difficult to find words to describe Lars' works, and even harder to truly make decisions as to whether or not his films are actually 'good'. That is a topic of conversation for another day though, today I focus only on Melancholia.

Trier is not known for following the rules. He makes the movies he wants to make, and I respect him for that. However, I don't always enjoy his movies because of it. This movie, as stated above, is part of his Depression Trilogy. This entry into the trilogy has a premise that is far more interesting than the rest, and a talented cast that brings Trier's dream to life. The characters are not likable, and often the audio is too quite to clearly hear the conversations, making for a fairly unenjoyable film.

The film looked beautiful, I have to give it that. There are a lot of positives in the film, actually, but there are also a lot of negatives. To fully enjoy this, you must give 110% attention, which in my current living arrangement is impossible. The film is ultimately ruined if you miss anything, so pay attention.

Rating: 7/10
