Death Race 2000 (1975) [Movie Review]
Death Race 2000 is set in a dystopian future in which the government has made hit-and-run a national sport by hosting the annual Transcontinental Road Race. In said race, 5 racers race through North America, scoring points by running down innocent bystanders, points vary based upon age and sex of the bystander. But after 20 years of these races, people have wised up and no longer wander the streets on race day(s). There is even a resistance trying to stop the president!
I love a good dystopian story every now and again. Actually, it's pretty rare that I won't love a good dystopian story (let's emphasize good on that). And I loved this movie! Obviously, this idea is completely farfetched, but it was just captivating enough to reel me in and root for a racer.
Sitting at just over an hour, it's a bit disappointing knowing how much more could have been done with with story, but even with the time we get, the film does great. I thought the political involvement was a perfect touch, and featured a perfect ending for a film of this nature.
Now I need to watch the remake, and sequels. Hopefully they are almost as good.
