Her (2013) [Movie Review]

I don't know where to start reviewing a film such as this. Every aspect that went into the production of Her was phenomenal. Every shot was near-breathtaking, the interactions were awkward when they needed to be and funny when they wanted to be.

When I first heard about Her I had no interest in it. You can't tell me that a movie about a guy dating his computer could actually be good. But then I recalled a lovely gem I watched not long ago by the name of Lars and the Real Girl, and realized that the ideas were very similar, so I was given hope. After I heard all of the praise this film got, I decided to watch it the first chance I could! So such was last night. The first chance I had to watch the movie. I was still fairly skeptical, but now I had hopes.

Like I said in the first paragraph; this was a wonderful film. It was creative and was complete with the perfect cast. Big (read: attractive) names will make this a profit, which means good films can survive for another year! Oh, and since we're on the subject; let's talk about the names featured on the official movie poster. I am perfectly fine with four out of five of those names. Four of those characters were huge parts of the plot. But using Olivia Wilde's name to attract potential viewers is aggravating to me. It's not unlike Side Effects last year using Channing Tatum. Wilde had, at most, 5 minutes of screen time. She was nothing of significance in the overall picture. But her name is right there in big letters on the poster! And, I know Hollywood contracts and all that jazz, just wanted to get that off of my chest.

The world created for Her was one of my favorite aspects of this movie. The timeline was ambiguous, all we know is that it's obviously in the future. They draw no attention to what year it was (other than the fact that it was after 1970) but have a perfect future-style set and props. By that I mean, none of the things featured were far-off from what we could produce in the future. It's also fair to assume that the hairstyles and attire choices could very well show up in a few years. Nothing blatantly wrong about the facts.

Overall, her might be uncomfortable to watch at parts, but if you can manage to power through the awkwardness, you will be rewarded with one wonderful film.
