Philomena (2013) [Movie Review]

"Heart-wrenching" and "hilarious" are words not often spoken in the same sentence. Yet somehow, they both suit this film perfectly.

For anyone who is unaware of the subject matter of Philomena, it follows the true story of Philomena Lee in her attempt to track down the son she was forced to give up some 50 years prior. I don't know much about the actual story, so I wouldn't know if there were any inaccuracies.

Judi Dench plays the lead lady, Philomena Lee. Phenomenally, I might add. She played the character so well that I did not see her as Judi Dench, but as the character she was playing. With an actress as popular as her, this is not an easy task. Judi Dench truly stole the show. This is not to say her co-star Steve Coogan was not also brilliant, Judi was just perfect.

I really have very few complaints about this movie. The whole thing went together so seamlessly that it is hard to nitpick. And truly, saying anything negative about this movie would be nitpicking. It is not wonder that this movie has been nominated for several Oscars.
