RoboCop (2014) [Movie Review]

Whenever something is remade or adapted from another source material, there will always be people who won't accept the changes made. There will always be people who are dissapointed with the newer product. I have avoided reading people's thoughts on the new RoboCop movie, but I'm sure the reception will be negative for the sole purpose of it being a remake.

However, when I watch movies based on plays, books, previous movies, etc., I try to look only at the current movie-at-hand. I did have a marathon of the original RoboCop trilogy the day before watching the newest installation, but I that has no impact on my thoughts of the newest movie.

So, let's get down to it. RoboCop opens brilliantly with Samuel L. Jackson humming before his televised broadcast regarding robots maintaining the peace in other countries. Don't fret, my friends; this movie still has the satire you loved from the original movie. But it's a little more sophisticated satire than what we saw in the original and much less tongue-in-cheek.

Throughout this new RoboCop, the question arises over what it means to be human. There are constant debates over whether or not Alex Murphy is a human or robot. There are even debates over whether or not he should be kept alive for these very reasons. And I love movies that raise questions such as this.

It was also very heart-wrenching seeing Murphy's family suffer through this ordeal. While the actress who plays his wife doesn't seem to give the role her heart and soul, she still somehow manages to get the correct emotions displayed for the audience.

But that doesn't matter much, this is an action movie first and foremost. And the action is awesome. Big guns, bad guys, and of course explosions. This movie is sure to entertain you.

Just remember to go in with an open mind, there are changes to original story, but many things did remain the same. There are nods to the original, yes. But this is 2014, the original was released in 1987. There is no way today's audience would accept a movie set up like a movie released in 1987.

Rating: 8/10
