Vampire Academy (2014) [Movie Review]

Other than the being 'from director of Mean Girls', this movie didn't have anything to make me actually interested. Well, and the vampires, I love vampires. So I went into this one with pretty low expectations.

And, maybe it was the fact that I had the bar set high, but I ended up loving this movie. I hate comparing movies, but to give everyone an idea of what I'm talking about; think Mean Girls meets Harry Potter. And before anyone takes the time to compare and poke fun at Twilight, the only thing these movies have in common is vampires and romance. The writing and all-around atmosphere is much different than that of Twilight.

So, in Vampire Academy, there are three types of vampires: The Moroi, who are full-blooded and royal vampires, but are mortal; they age and die in the same ways as any human would. Then there are Dhampir, who are half human/half vampire; they're sole purpose in life is to protect the Moroi from the evil vampires.

Which brings us to the last group of vampires, the Strigoi. These are the evil vampires. They are immortal and stronger than any of the other types.

So, inside the Vampire Academy, the Moroi learn how to control their magic powers, the Dhampir train to become better protectors of their Moroi friends. The Academy does everything in their power to keep the Strigoi out of their borders.

That's all I'm going to mention about the plot of this movie.

I was personally unimpressed with the way the movie opened. When movies use songs that are currently popular, they don't leave a lasting impression. The audience of today can relate, but what about the audience of ten years from now? They might think the music is outdated, and they would be right. An original score is always the perfect way to go, but it's not an easy task.

Other than just the music, the whole opening sequence was nothing more than mediocre. But as our movie goes on, and we learn more about our main characters, the movie actually gets quite compelling. There are a few actresses who were less than impressive, but as whole, the cast does a great job.

All-in-all, I enjoyed this movie. I can't say whether or not other people would though. This movie is definitely made for teenage girls, so watch with caution.
