The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) [Movie Review]

Well this turned out to be a perfect follow-up to Heaven Is for Real. This film chronicles the life and love of Didier and Elise. It has a similar feel of Blue Valentine, cutting from happy love to angry fights. Their daughter has cancer and is fighting to live. Elise believes in higher powers, while Didier is athiest. Religion, and lack thereof, is what is poking at the seems of this relationship.

While some of the transitions between time periods are sure to leave the viewer confused, I found most everything about this film to be perfect. I am huge bluegrass fan, so the constant bluegrass music going on in the both the background and foreground was a treat for me. I also found it interesting that while the movie is Flemish (also, I am just learning that 'Flemish' is what that language is called), all of the songs are sung in English.

I don't want to say much about this one, both because I'm tired and because I think that it needs to be viewed first hand. But I will say that many scenes were heart-wrenching, and the finale almost had me tearing up. This movie is very well done.

Rating: 8/10
