Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) [Movie Review]

A possibly deranged military general give the orders to drop nuclear bombs on Russia, and that man is the only person with the codes to stop the attack. He has locked down his base, and shut off all communication. Now a group of politicians, military leaders and a scientist sit in the Pentagon and attempt to devise a plan to stop the attack. If the bombs drop, the entire human race will be obliterated.

Damn, that's a scary thought. This movie is a comedy so I have to wonder how many people have stumbled upon it, thinking it will be some ridiculous movie, and then hating the movie because it is actually a (relatively) smart comedy. I actually avoided this movie for far too long because I was thinking the opposite way, and that it would be so stupid that I would hate it. Boy, I was wrong. I really should have known better, seeing as how Stanley Kubrick wrote and directed.

Well, anyway, I love the movie. It's comedy is clean and simple, yet sophisticated at the same time. Towards the end of the movie, the men are bickering over things that are no longer important, and I loved that. The themes of human nature are strong, and I believe that after I watch this movie again I will have more to say about it, but right now I'm almost at a loss for words.

Rating: 9/10
