World's Greatest Dad (2009) [Movie Review]

Dark comedy is a genre that is not for everyone and is a taste that must be acquired. It is arguably the most difficult genre to film without offending someone. And that is the main reason I love the genre.

So, if you didn't guess from my first thought up there, World's Greatest Dad is a dark comedy. It stars Robin Williams as a father who, after finding his son dead in an embarrassing fashion, writes a fake suicide note to protect his son's image. Said suicide note eventually grows viral and the father finds himself dealing with the growing fame of his son.

This movie does a nice job of humanizing all of the characters. Only a handful of characters are static, in that they are either 100% likable or 100% unlikable. Every other character has their ups and downs, just like real people! It's a little sad that it's almost exclusively independent films that can manage to do this.

What I liked most about the movie is how everyone reacted to the suicide. It showed perfectly how quickly someone's attitude towards another person changes after death. As morbid as it is, you all know it happens.

The majority of people will praise anyone who is dead, no matter what they had done in life.
Like I said, this movie is not for everyone. But if you can handle something dark, World's Greatest Dad is a great choice!
