Equilibrium (2002) [Movie Review]

Equilibrium takes place in a dystopian future in which everyone takes a serum that not only controls their emotions, it completely gets rid of them. Christian Bale plays John Preston, a cleric who must find the 'sense-offenders' and turn them to justice. He also must destroy anything that would create 'feelings'; these include, but are not limited to, ancient paintings, aesthetically pleasing carvings of any kind, music, and much more.

The start of this film gave me a bad vibe. I didn't know how it would turn out, but it kind of seemed like it could go downhill fast. Fortunately, it only goes up in quality.

Making a character such as Preston believable is not an easy task. You have to be emotionless, which is difficult enough for some people. You also need to be able to make the audience believe that you are feeling emotions for the first time. Christian Bale did a wonderful job doing this.

I really liked this movie because it begged the question of what it means to be alive. Many of us have heard the phrase "Life isn't worth living without the one you love." But what about not even having the ability to love. What is life? And is it worth it if you can't feel emotions? My favorite movies are ones that raise questions such as this. And subsequently, I love this movie.

Rating: 8/10
