"You want a guy who doesn't have guts to fight back?"
"No, I want a guy who has the guts not to fight back."
I don't know if that is was an actual quote from Robinson and Rickey, but my god that was beautiful. Many know that line was in the trailer, and that line alone would have convinced me to see this movie. And I don't even like baseball! But seeing Harrison Ford as a lead character, and it being more-or-less a history film, there was no way I was missing this film.
For those of you that don't know, 42 is the story of Jackie Robinson, portrayed by Chadwick Boseman. It is very rare to find a person who has not heard of Jackie Robinson, but for those of who have not heard of him; he was the first black person to be in the MLB. Kind of a big deal. The movie is named after Jack's number. Oh, did you know that the number "42" is the only number that has been retired by all teams in the MLB? I learned that after watching this movie. Learning is always fun, you can never have too much education.
Anyway, as I already stated, I'm not a huge fan of baseball. Yes, I will watch a game with some friends, and I will never turn down an opportunity to go to a game, but I can't call myself a fan. I don't follow stats, I don't talk about the games, I just watch. So when the film came around and started talking about technical rules about the game, I had no idea what I was listening to. That part the film seem a bit long. But even not being a fan of baseball, you will still find yourself rooting for Jackie. The film features very "real" dialogue, and by that I mean many racial slurs are uttered. I wonder how long it will take people to call this movie racist? But all joking aside, I'm very happy that filmmakers didn't edit out the racism. I mean, they wouldn't have a movie without the racism...
42 is a good film, but a little on the predictable side in terms of character progression. Still nice to watch, and learn from. The acting is amazing all around. A must-see for any sports fan, and I would even recommend it to people who aren't sports fans. You might just learn something.
