Raising Arizona (1987) [Movie Review]

A criminal and a cop get married. Already sounds like sitcom, but now let's add baby to the mix! And not just any baby, a stolen baby. That is primarily the plot of the 1980's gem Raising Arizona. Definitely an original premise, but was it good?

Short answer, it was decent. The film was slap-stick, so everything was a tad bit over-the-top. The characters were all great, and played perfectly by their respective actor/actresses. Seriously, has John Goodman ever had a bad role? And I know Nicolas Cage has some haters, but he is genuinely a good actor, he has just taken some poor roles in the past, and for obvious reasons.

"A comedy beyond belief." That is the tagline for this film, and boy is it fitting. Nothing that happened in this film is believable; the relationship between the two, stealing a baby (and the consiquences for stealing the baby), other ex-cons breaking out of prison, just about every detail in this film is "beyond belief."

Yet somehow this film is a treat to watch. It's far from great, but the film will definitely grow on you. Raising Arizona may have some weak spots, but it still gets a recommendation from me.

Rank: 7/10
