Life of Pi (2012) [Movie Review]

Life of Pi is an incredible story of a tragic shipwreck and the aftermath that comes of it; the very unlikely friendship between a young boy, Pi, and a Bengal tiger by the name of Richard Parker. The story if being told by an adult Pi to a man who wants to write the story. Pi believes that his story is one that would make anyone believe in God.

Even if you hate every bit of dialogue, or every action Pi makes, if nothing else, you will love the visuals of this movie. One of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. From the opening we get breathtaking shots of almost every animal at the zoo, then we continue to get beautiful camera shots throughout the entire film. Not a single shot in this film was just "okay", they were all superb in some way.

Now, obviously this film is going to have many people that dislike it. The material is rather graphic and the message it sends will most definitely offend some. But then again, every movie has at least one "fan" and at least one "hater" - that's just a fact of life.

As for me, I initially thought that this film sounded odd. I decided from the trailer that it didn't like my kind of movie. And the less-than-glowing reviews from my friends that saw it didn't change my mind. But boy was I wrong. Life of Pi was beautiful in every way. Pi is a very interesting character, he survived the better part of a year alone on a boat! Well, not alone, he also a friend who wouldn't think twice about eating.

This film is a masterpiece, and I would personally recommend this film to any lover of cinema.

Rating: 9/10

Discussion topic: Pi kept reminding himself not to give up hope. How long do you think you could last alone on a ship without certainty of survival?
