Christopher Walken, Al Pacino, Alan Arkin; there is no denying the greatness of these actors. An ensemble of this degree is without a doubt noteworthy. Then we move on to the plot; retired gangsters having one last hurrah before one is to be murdered. That's a damn good premise right there! But does it hold up?
Al Pacino plays Val, an aged gangster who is just being released from prison. Christopher Walken plays Doc, one of his last remaining friends; the only man that took the time to talk to Val while he was away. Val is ecstatic to be out of slammer, but Doc just seems to be moping around. Then we're hit with the news; Doc's final duty in the gang is to kill Val. His best friend. Luckily he buys some time, and on comes the party! With only 9 hours before Val's untimely demise; the two head to nursing home to get the last member of the crew; Hirsch, played by Alan Arkin.
All three are stand up guys. Sure, they break the law, but they come from a time where gangsters still followed codes. In the midst of partying, they make sure to fix some of the problems with the gangs of today.
Unfortunately, even with all of the star power involved in this film, it was much less than amazing. The dialogue between the characters seemed almost forced. And while it was fun seeing the old-timers do crazy things, nothing was really exciting. The ending was near cringe worthy in quality.
A fun idea, a great cast, but a terrible follow-through. I wouldn't recommend this film, but I wouldn't not recommend it either.
