The based on a true story concept has been around since the start of cinema. In recent years, it has been a major draw-in for moviegoers. Pain & Gain is based on a true story, and they decided to make it a comedy. Now, I don't know everything about what actually happened with the Sun Gym Gang, but I found it odd to making the jokes they made. So, that said, I completely understand that the people who were affected by this gang in real life would boycott this movie.
Now, I am not one of those people. I actually had no knowledge of these events prior to watching the trailer for this film, and subsequently the film itself. For those who don't know, Pain & Gain stars Mark Wahlberg as Daniel Lugo, Dwayne Johnson as Paul Doyle, and Anthony Mackie as Adrian Doorbal. Lugo is the man with the plan and the guy in charge. His first recruit is Doorbal, then later adds Doyle to the roster. All three have served time and are looking for second chances and a better life. They know you can't cheat your way to the American Dream, but that doesn't stop them from trying!
Again, I'm going to talk about the comedy in this film. I love comedies, they're almost never "perfect" films, but I have always enjoyed watching them. While much of this film was hilarious, the simple fact they are making fun or real murder victims is in ill-taste. When watching the film, it's best to try and not think of it as being based on true events. The only problem with that approach is that you are constantly being reminded that it's a true story. But, the performances from Wahlberg, The Rock, Mackie, and even Ed Harris were to the point of perfection. They all work great together, and I would love to see this ensemble again.
Overall, a decent movie. Far from a must-see, and many of the parts of the film are in bad taste, but it's an interesting film.
