To many, the film adaptation of Marvel Comics' Thor leaves a bitter taste their mouth. Many people find that this film is on par with Iron Man 2 and one of the worst films in Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Now, if you read my review of Iron Man 2, you would know that I enjoyed that movie too. But why does everyone say that Thor was so bad? Were they right?
Well, I've just now learned that Thor actually received primarily positive reviews. Though it is still generally ill-received to the public. And in my humble opinion, I believe the people who hate this movie to be wrong. But what's the reason it gets so much flack? Because it made so much money. Much like Twilight, Iron Man 2, Transformers, you name a successful movie series, it has a great many people who hate the film. So my former rant may not be necessary. I'll move on as to why I enjoy the film now.
For one, the commitment from star Chris Hemsworth, the man who played Thor, shows how far he will go for a role. When he first landed the role, he was far too scrawny to don the suit he was to wear. He worked vigorously to beef up, and go too big. He had to then shrink himself down again before filming. Now he's no Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, or Daniel Day-Lewis - yet - but he is well on his way.
Now, talking about the film itself, it simply looks great. Not perfect, but still much nicer than one would expect from a film like this. Hemsworth is a perfect fit as Thor, and no other man but Tom Hiddleson should play Loki. The casting for these two is marvelous. The primary downfall of this film is it's predictable plot structure and uninteresting romance. But, we get even more information on S.H.I.E.L.D., and for a fan of Marvel that is reason enough to buy this film.
So, if this film a masterpiece? No. Is it a must-see? No. But it is a fun film and worth a watch if you've seen the rest of the series.
Rating: 8/10
