Broken City digs into the depths of the 'broken' New York City. Mark Wahlberg plays Billy Taggart - a cop who we see standing over a dead man in the first scene of the film. Billy is then sent to court, the mayor pulls some strings for him, and the case is closed. Flash forward seven years, Billy is now a private eye and his business isn't raking in all of the cash it should be. So, when Billy get's a call from the mayor, played by the one and only Russell Crowe, he goes to talk to him right away. They mayor's job is simple: Take pictures of the guy she's having an affair with. Without spoiling too much, Billy gets blamed for a lot of stuff he didn't do, and he decides to dig deeper into the Broken City. Uncovering a lot of dirt, ultimately winning his case against the mayor.
The movie as a whole was good, but pretty forgettable. The acting from Wahlberg is slightly above good, but slightly below great. Crowe's acting was great, but we don't see him nearly as much as the rest of the characters. The movie sure looked good, though. And, once again, my biggest beef with the film is it's ending. Now, there really was no good way to end this film, but I believe it would have been better if they cut one scene early.
Rating: 7/10
General discussion topic: Billy is offered $50,000 to do the job for the mayor, an amount he finds to be too much to pass up. How much money would that be for you?
Discussion topic for those who have seen the movie: Do you think Billy was in the right to kill the guy at the beginning?
