Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) [Movie Review]

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town follows the story of Longfellow Deeds, a tuba player from a small town atmosphere. When Longfellow's uncle dies, Longfellow inherits his uncles fortune; $20 million! So a group of rich people go to pick him up from his hometown of Mandrake Falls.

So, gaining all of that money, he becomes the talk of the town; and the attention of all the media. An attractive newspaper reporter is put on the case, acting as Mary Dawson, to get exclusive stories on Mr. Deeds.

Now, Longfellow is a nice guy, and always does what he can to help people. Even if that means punching a few people for his lady, Mary Dawson. This gets him into trouble. First, trouble with the law and his company, bad publicity is bad for business, you know. But then, when he decided he wants to donate his fortune, he is labelled as insane, and must contest the charges in court.

This movie is almost exactly the same as Mr. Deeds (2002), I'm glad I found out about this one, because I actually enjoy this one more. Yes, there is poor editing involved, but oh well, it was the '30s! If you liked the re-make of Mr. Deeds, I would highly suggest checking this one out.

Rating: 7/10

Discussion topic: How would you react to receiving $20 million? What would you do with the money?
