Hugo (2011) [Movie Review]

Prior to viewing Hugo, I had no idea what it was about. It looked interesting enough, but I was expecting nothing more than just some kid who fixes clocks and what-not.

Hugo is set in 1930s Paris, following the story of Hugo Cabret. Hugo is an orphan, living in a train station, stealing food to survive and toy parts to fix up an automaton - the last thing he has to remind him of his father. Being an orphan and a thief, he is constantly running away from the station inspector, played by Sacha Baren Cohen. One day, while attempting to steal a wind-up toy mouse from a small toy store inside the station, the shop owner, played by Ben Kingsley, notices him. The shop owner proceeds to take a notebook from Hugo, the notebook with information on the automaton. Events transpire and we find out that the shop owner is in fact the legendary film maker Georges Méliès! After discovering this, Hugo sets out to see why Méliès stopped working on film.

As I stated earlier, this movie took me by surprise. I was not expecting this to be a very good movie, but I decided to check it out anyway and I am glad I did! For one, it looks beautiful. I was pulled into the film the moment it started, even with the slow start. The movie had great character development and did a great job making Méliès' life a mystery. With such great character development, I was pulled right into the world of Hugo Cabret, and my heart was pounding every time the station inspector was chasing him. A great film, highly recommend checking it out.
