All Good Things (2010) [Movie Review]

Contradictory to it's title, not all things that happen in this All Good Things are "good." No, I'm not saying this film was bad, the opposite is true of that! But while this film may begin somewhat cheery, it does not end this way.

Opening to present-day David Marks (Ryan Gosling) being questioned, he tells his entire life story. David Marks is modeled after the real-life Robert Durst, who you will learn a lot about through watching this film, should you ever decide upon watching. After watching his mother commit suicide, David is left with many mental issues, most closely diagnosed with schizophrenia. He comes from a rich family therefore his father doesn't approve of his marrying someone from the middle class. David and his wife Katie (Kirsten Dunst) want to get away from the big city, so they move out to the country, buy a nice little house, and start a small business. David's father will eventually come and again ask him to join the family business. Thinking of his wife, he accepts the offer.

Now, the "family business" is in real estate. But it's also in a few other controversial topics. So when David and Katie begin fighting, which happens an increasingly number of times as time passes, Katie will begin snooping more into just what exactly her husband does. All of these things lead up to mysterious disappearance of Katie, a missing person since 1982 - and still has not been found. The film then dives into David's life after the alleged murder.

Interestingly enough, Robert Durst has seen this movie and has stated he enjoyed it. His commentary of the film is even on the DVD. I have currently not seen said commentary, but I will post my thoughts in an update once I've seen it.

As for my personal views on the film - it was great! The acting and dialogue was superb! The film has some minor faults in the form of clichés, but it easy to overlook them and enjoy the wonderful performanced from Gosling and Dunst! I would highly recommend this film.

Rating: 8/10

Discussion topic: Do you believe the real man David Marks is modeled after truly killed his wife?
