Mud (2012) [Movie Review]

I know what many of you are thinking; Who the hell wants to watch a movie about mud? And if that is your reaction, it is clear that you are not "in the loop" for cinema.

"Mud" is the name of a mysterious man whom the young Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and 'Neckbone' (Jacob Lofland) discover on a small island. Mud is living in a that found it's way into a tree, hiding out from the world and waiting for the love of his life. Initially we know very little about Mud, but yet the children feel it necessary to help him. The audience will slowly learn more about Mud as the children must make the tough decisions as to whether or not they want to continue helping him.

Love, or maybe it should be classified as "love," is a major plot element for this film. It is the drive behind Mud's every movement. It's what ultimately keeps Ellis wanting to help. And it's what ends up getting Ellis in the most trouble. After watching the movie, I was surprised by how powerful these messages actually were.

Now, I haven't seen Matthew McConaughey in a movie since Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (don't judge me, and I won't judge you...), and I was blown away by his performance. I had heard good things about his role, but actually seeing him in this role was as if I was actually seeing this man they call Mud. Even the children, Tye and Jacob, give great performances. If they continue acting, I could see a very bright future for both. Unfortunately, however, Ms. Witherspoon gives a less-than-fantastic performance. However, that may be the fault of the writer/director.

Overall 'Mud' is a powerful film, destined to win awards. And while the film isn't action-packed in the slightest, it still gets a high recommendation from me.

Rating: 9/10
