Les Misérables (2012) [Movie Review]

Another film adaptation of Les Misérables. How many is that now? 13; plus the musicals and TV series. I think this is the most redone film in cinema history. And as long as they stay good, I'll keep watching them.

I'm just going to assume we all know what happens by now... bread, slavery, death, love... death.

And somehow it's great every time. I often find musicals about such morbid topics to be somewhat odd, but in Les Misérables everything was performed with such beauty, I can't say it felt weird at all. All of the songs were great (I bought the soundtrack to go with it), and were more often than not performed great. A few actors were, well... actors. It was clear some had no prior vocal experience. But Jackman, originating from Broadway, stole the show and brought life to the character.

The biggest problem with musicals is never knowing how much should be sung and how much should be spoken. This film suffered from a few awkward transitions between speaking and singing. Fortunately, once the awkwardness fades, the songs are beautifully written and sung, so it's easy to get over it.

Overall, Les Misérables isn't a must-see, but it's a fun adaptation nonetheless. If you want to sit through a 2.5 hour musical, I'm not going to stop you.

Rating: 7/10
