*Spoilers Ahead*
Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, Susan Sarandon, this movie can't possibly be bad! Wait... can it?
The stunning cast is the only possible way I can recommend seeing this movie. Other than those very few moments that make you chuckle, this film has zero redeeming factors. I'm sure the cast had fun making this film, but I know I did not have fun watching it.
Going in to the film, I wondered; just how big can this wedding be? I was not impressed with the answer. Double wedding, everyone! I bet you didn't see that one coming! Oh, and speaking of predictable, let's talk about the rest of the film.
The film follows several members of one family as each deals with their problems. For starters Don (Robert De Niro) and Ellie (Diane Keaton) are long-divorced, but don't hate each other. Don's new girlfriend, who just so happens to be one of Ellie's best friends, remain good friends. Alejandro (Ben Barnes), the adopted son of Don and Ellie, is getting married. He doesn't agree with the terms of his marriage, however. The priest making him vow to raise his children in the church is a big turn off for him. However, he has no problem inviting his biological mother to the wedding, who is extremely religious. So, to make her feel more comfortable, he tells her that Don and Ellie are still happily married. Now Don's girlfriend, Bebe (Susan Sarandon) must leave to help protect the lie. And the other problems come from the other kids. Jared (Topher Grace) is the 30 year old virgin who has been waiting to find love. Until he sees a hot chick who wants to have sex with him, then to-hell with love. And the last is Lyla (Katherine Heigl) who has just broke up with her boyfriend because of her inability to have children.
The one tiny paragraph just explained the entire film. I just saved you $10, you're welcome.
I don't know if this film is supposed to mean anything, but the few messages that were imposed are terrible. Up first; All families have problems. This one is an okay message and a very truthful one. But the lengths the filmmakers went to ensure the message is clear is beyond belief. At the end the audience is just hit with more and more problems. The other message; fuck everyone! Nothing bad comes from having casual sex. So grab your neighbor, friend, enemy, even your sister! No sex is bad sex, and there are literally no consequences! Oh, and how could I forget, if you ever want to have a kid but can't seem to make it work, just break up and the gal will be pregnant by nightfall!
Overall the performances were decent, but the script was terrible, putting it nicely. Within the first 10 minutes, the audience is given every bit of information they need to play the entire movie out in their head. Nothing in this isn't predictable or cliché. I want to say good things about this movie, I really do, but I cannot think of anything good to say. Some moments were chuckle-worthy, but I never once felt the urge to laugh. I never once felt connected to a character. Just not a good movie. I can not recommend this film to anyone.
