Knowing nothing about An American in Paris before viewing it, I was definitely in for a surprise. For starters, I had no idea it was a full-on musical. I could see from the poster that there would be some song and dance, but having a snip-it of nearly 20 minutes with no dialogue was very surprising for myself.
It was a good surprise.
This film was amazing. From the humorous opening of Jerry (Gene Kelly) introducing the viewer to his life, complete with the camera "accidentally" landing upon the wrong persons window. Jerry is a WWII veteran who decided to live out the rest of his life in the beautiful Paris as a painter. He has no complaints about life, except for the small problem of him having no money. So when a rich gal offers him a fair amount of money for his works, in addition to helping him sell some more, he jumps right on that wagon. It's quite obvious that this girl, Milo (Nina Foch), has a further interest in Jerry than just his art. Which gets complicated when Jerry finds himself another woman.
Who doesn't like a good love triangle? Or possibly love square would suite this situation better? Anyway, the relationships in this film are great. While most things in this film are unrealistic, the relationships all felt real. Some moments of suspending disbelief is necessary, but all-in-all very nice, realistic, relationships.
This film was a great mix of comedy, music, and romance. I highly recommend this film to any true fan of cinema.
