(500) Days of Summer (2009) [Movie Review]

Wow, this film was a roller-coaster of emotions. Which used to be something I jokingly said about really bad movies, but (500) Days of Summer truly managed the roller-coaster effect. Starting out, Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has just broken up with his kinda-sorta girlfriend Summer (Zooey Deschanel) and is in the beginning stages of a depression. Then we get flash-backs about how the love began, and how it all falls apart.

(500) Days of Summer is set up amazingly. The use of flash-backs and flash-forwards is outstanding, keeping the viewer interested in the film the entire way through. In addition to flash-backs and flash-forwards, there are old-timey style short films to convey the emotions of Tom and Summer. These short films feel very misplaced, and take away from the enjoyment of the film. Removing them would have been a great choice. The soundtrack of this film fits perfectly, with it's wide array of genres and emotions, the songs perfectly portray the emotions each scene tries to create. I have very few complaints about this film, other than the few shorts they have, and the cheesy ending, this film is wonderful. A definite recommendation to anyone!
