Very Bad Things (1998) [Movie Review]

In this dark comedy, Kyle Fisher (Jon Favreau) is getting married to Laura Garrety (Cameron Diaz), who is a bitch, to put it nicely. Before their special day, Kyle is going to have a fun bachelor party in Vegas, with his closest friends. In Vegas, one of the group members accidentally kills a prostitute. Then, when a security guard shows up to check on the noise complaint, another group member kills the guard. They bury them both in the desert and hope all goes well. Well, then a couple people feel guilty, so they are "taken care of." Then the wedding day, Kyle tells Laura what happened, and he is given an ultimatum. After which, a terrible ending ensues, if they would have cut the last scene it would have been a lot better, but they didn't.

The film started out strong and funny, but turned completely unrealistic after the killing of the security guard, thus "killing" the movie. Two people are killed, one had a family and was in the newspaper after the incident, they used a credit card to pay for the hotel, there is no way the police wouldn't have found them. Especially when they were super suspicious around police, and really everyone else too. But ignoring that minor plot hole... Laura is a grade A bitch. Yes, it's her wedding, but at no time in this film does she have likable quality. But oh well, not my problem. The acting was really good, and really the only good thing about this movie. Overall, Very Bad Things is a very bad movie, I'd give it a pass (It's currently free on Netflix Instant, though).

Rating: 6/10
