Safe Haven (2013) [Movie Review]

Safe Haven is based of the Nicolas Sparks novel of the same name. Having not read that book, I'll start out by saying that I probably never will. You get a fairly boring plot; Katie (Julianne Hough) is running away from her dark past, while the police are in search of her. She ends up in a nice, small town, meets Alex (Josh Duhamel), an attractive young man who owns the convenient store she first stops at. Katie then buys a house, and has to go to the convenient store to get supplies to fix the place up. She falls for Alex over time, and as their love story progresses, so does more information on her "dark secret." Eventually leading to the rather atrocious ending.

Though my words make it seem like I didn't like the film, it was a decent movie. It has a terrible ending, which if you ever watch it, you'll probably agree. It catches some people off guard, but most people should see it coming, at least a little. The love story of Katie and Alex was surprisingly well played, which is good seeing as how that is the main point of the film. The acting from the police officer searching for Katie is not very good at his job. Both in acting and in finding Katie. He is a drunk in the film, but can't act like a drunk. Very annoying trying to follow what was going on with him. Overall, a decent movie. I'd give it a pass, unless you truly love Nicolas Sparks.

Rating: 7/10

Discussion topic: Alex's first wife passed away from cancer, and wrote letters for their kids. When the kids got to be a certain age, or after completing a certain task (18th birthday, passing drivers test), they would receive a letter from their mother. How would you react to getting one of those from your parents? Would you do the same thing for them, if you knew you were going to die?
