The Lorax (2012) [Movie Review]

The Lorax is an animated version of the Dr. Seuss classic of the same name. The world of The Lorax is full of smog and pollution, all of the trees have been destroyed and the residents buy air in cans and bottles. Ted (voiced by Zac Efron) has a crush on Audry (voiced by Taylor Swift); who says that if anyone could bring her a real tree, she would marry them on the spot. This gives Ted a sudden interest in trees, so he sets off to try to figure out how to get one. His grandmother tells him to go visit the Once-Ler (voiced by Ed Helms), so he breaks out of the city, and goes to visit him. Once arriving at the Once-Ler's hut, Ted is forced to listen to the story of how the Once-Ler chopped down every last tree.

Throughout the film, none of the characters were ever likable, except maybe Audry or the grandmother, who got almost no screen time. It's clear Ted doesn't care about the environment or trees, which is the whole purpose of the Once-Ler's story. The Once-Ler is just some asshole that chopped down every last tree for his business. He even had a song that he wasn't bad, he was just doing what comes naturally. The strengths of this film are the forest animals and The Lorax (voiced by Danny DeVito) which really give the film it's comedic aspect that you expect from a Dr. Seuss film animation. But the terrible characters mixed with the horrible ending make for a very "meh" movie experience.

Rating: 6/10
