Paper Man (2009) [Movie Review]

"Paper Man," sounds like some stupid B-movie that you only want to watch because it's so God-awful, right? Well, you would be wrong in that assumption. Look past the poor title and you find yourself in a wonderful drama filled comedy. Which brings up the next point, this film may be a comedy, but it's also a rather serious drama. Yes, look past the hilarious cast, because this film is chock-full of great story elements, with just a hint of comedy. So, the premise of Paper Man is that a failing writer, Richard Dunn (Jeff Daniels), moves to Long Beach for the winter in hopes of overcoming his writers block. His wife, Claire Dunn (Lisa Kudrow), visits him once or twice a month; making Richard wonder about his marriage. One of Richard's problems lies in that he still talks to his imaginary friend, Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds), who tries to be the voice of reason for Richard, but Richard never listens. One day, Richard goes out on the town, and find a lovely young lady on the street, and asks her if she would like to be his babysitter. The lady agrees and meets him at house; that lady is Abby (Emma Stone), and she has a very depressing past, we eventually find out.

The cast in this film is amazing, but admittedly make the film seem like it's going to be a bad movie. As stated above, this is far from the truth. The character progression is done so smoothly; you're never hit with massive bits of information, you slowly get all of the character's information throughout the course of the entire movie. The acting was, well, decent; some did great, some did not. But the main two, Daniels and Stone, really played their parts great, so it works out.

Rating: 8/10
