Beautiful Creatures (2013) [Movie Review]

Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich) is constantly dreaming about a girl, that's fairly normal, though. What's odd is that the girl he is dreaming about is someone he has never seen before, and her face is always covered in the dreams. Then the girl of his dreams moves to town, literally. Now, Ethan lives in a very rural, very christian community, and the girl who's just moving to town, Lena (Alice Englert) is the niece of Macon Ravenwood (Jeremy Irons). The Ravenwood's are supposedly witches, so the entire town shuns Lena instantly and is very reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials. But Ethan doesn't care, he wants to get to know her, and get to know her he does. After a short while, he learns about her entire family, and the situation she is in. After learning, he tries to do as much as he can to help.

Now, I did cut out a few key components, I'm trying to keep my reviews as spoiler-free as possible. But, what I can say is that this film is very mediocre. The acting was pretty bad, the music didn't seem to go with the themes they were trying to set, and the text in the opening and credits didn't match the films mood at all. The character development was terrible, you only really learn about one or two characters, and they're not the main ones. It relied too heavily on other materials, and was just a "meh" experience. I'd give this one a pass, but it seemed that it was a similar set-up to the Twilight series (I haven't seen those films yet, so I can't say if they are or not), so if you liked those, you may like this. But otherwise, it's probably just a pass.

Rating: 6/10

Discussion topic: Imagine you're 17 years old again. Do you chance death to be with a woman you think you love?
