Olympus Has Fallen (2013) [Movie Review]

One man must take on a large group of men. Where have I seen this before? Oh well, this movie is exactly what the trailers make it out to be; an action film.

After a tragic accident causing the death of the First Lady, Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is demoted and even a year after the incident, is still haunted by the events. Now, when the White House is attacked, Banning finds himself fighting to protect the president and his son, and the country, all by himself.

The opening of this film makes it seem as though it is going to be a deep, touching film. This, however, is not the case. Sure, it suspense a few times, but knowing it's a movie you know what is going to happen. Butler plays a pretty good bad-ass. And Eckhart acts his part great, but his character was very badly written. He goes against protocol almost every time he talks, and is just not a very bright leader. And Freeman played a pretty good Acting President, but was also poorly written, and had very little screen time. Overall, it was fun to see the hypothetical attack on the White House, and the action was great, but the movie as a whole was somewhat lacking. I'm not sure if this movie is worth the ticket price, but it might be worth renting when that is available.

Rating: 7/10

Discussion topic: How do you think United States would react to the White House being taken over, along with the President?
