Twilight (2008) [Movie Review]

Whether you've seen the films or not, there is no way you have not heard of Twilight. It's everyone's go-to for a bad movie, despite the fact that most of the people saying that have never seen the damn thing.

Anyway, Twilight is an interesting take on both vampire mythology and love. Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) moves to Forks, Washington, with her father. Bella isn't exactly a normal girl, she would rather be alone, and doesn't care if she "fits in" with the other kids. When she arrives at school, she pretty quickly finds a group of friends, and learns about the Cullen family (Not to be confused with the Collins family from Dark Shadows). The Cullen's are an add group of adopted children that keep to themselves. Upon entering biology class, Bella finds that her lab partner is none other than Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson)! First appearing to hate Bella, she makes it her goal to find out more about Edward. She finds out some interesting facts (spoilers: he's a vampire!) and they begin a beautiful relationship.

Okay, now this film wasn't perfect, but it definitely doesn't deserve the hate it gets. At the beginning of the film, the acting is a bit cheesy, over-the-top, and all too dramatic; but if you sit through it, you do actually get to a decent story, and progressively better acting. If you go into this expecting a bloodshed from the vampires, you'll realize very quickly that you've made a poor decision. This is very much a love story, and the supernatural creatures are merely metaphors for other problems. Granted, I'm a pretty big fan of vampire mythology, and didn't like the changes they made, but the changes work for this story. Overall, Twilight is far from great, but it isn't bad. It's worth watching, especially if you have intention of bashing it.

Rating: 7/10

Discussion topic: Let's just discuss the tagline; When you can live forever, what do you live for?
