The Help is a powerful drama set in the Civil Rights era following the lives of a few maids, and the white girl, "Skeeter" (Emma Stone) who wants to write a book about them. Yes, I'll admit that Emma Stone was a big part in me choosing to watch this film, but that wasn't the only reason.
Skeeter thinks differently than most of the other white ladies. She believes that the black's deserve to be treated with at least some respect, and thinks that writing a book about them will help change peoples opinions on the matter. None of the maids wanted to join in at first, but after a few key events, more and more ladies started pouring in. The main two maids are Aibileen (Viola Davis) and Minny (Octavia Spencer). And our main antagonist is is Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas), a very cruel woman who is attempting to change laws to make the maids' lives worse than they already are. But, she eventually gets what she deserves.
So, as stated earlier, this is a very powerful film. The acting was amazing, it was a tad bit weird hearing Stone's (and the rest of the cast too, I guess) southern accent, but it didn't take long to get used to. From the moment the film started, I couldn't look away, there was something in this film that I can't explain, but I loved it. These kind of movies always make think, and wonder how these things happened in "The Land of the Free." But that's all been said before, I don't want to go into a rant on it. Overall, this was a great movie. I'd highly recommend it, and I feel this should be shown in schools when teaching Civil Rights.
Rating: 9/10
Discussion topic: Obviously, in the '60s treating the black community badly was socially acceptable. Do you think, in 50 years, we'll look back and see problems with how we treat a certain group of people? If so, what do you believe those problem(s) would be?
