The future is always bleak, it seems. "It's the year 2022, people are still the same. They'll do anything to get what they need, and they need Soylent Green." With a tagline like that, I don't know how anyone could pass on this film.
Set in the year 2022, due to pollution and overpopulation, the oceans are dying, and Earth suffers fromt he greenhouse effect. Very little food can survive, so scientists create artificial products, the newest of which is Soylent Green. Charles Heston plays Detective Thorn, who lives with his elder friend Sol Roth, played by Edward G. Robinson. Sol knows of the world before it's destruction, and is ashamed of the way humans now live. Thorn knew very little of the world before it's destruction, so he doesn't understand why Sol feels the he does about the world. After the murder of a wealthy businessman, and former director of the Soylent Corporation, Thorn is put on the case. With the help of Sol, he uncovers some very unsettling news and must do what he can to save his friends.
I already had known about the big twist in this film before watching it, and for that reason it was much less enjoyable. That's not to say this film wasn't enjoyable. The acting and character development was amazing. At one point in time, Thorn receives a collection of vegetables and beef, and Heston does a great job making it seem like he had never eaten certain foods. Robinson does a superb job making the audience believe it truly had been decades since he had last eaten an apple. Overall, Soylent Green is an amazing film, and I would venture to say it's a must-see. Please, check it out!
