The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011) [Movie Review]

Okay, so by now I can safely say that I do, in fact, like Twilight. Somehow the story has hooked me. That being said, this film was very enjoyable for me, but if you weren't a fan of the series, this could seem like a long, drawn out film. Nothing really exciting happens, but we get a lot of insight on our characters, and some rather suspenseful scenes.

Our story picks up almost directly where we last left off. Bella is preparing for her wedding day. Before they wed, Edward decides to tell Bella a little more about his past, in hopes of making her rethink her situation. She obviously doesn't. All of her friends, family, and even a few members of the Wolf Pack come to congratulate her. Many jokes are made, about how Bella has to be pregnant, about how Edward will be a good husband, and my personal favorite; about how Bella won't be able to sleep for the rest of her life - I don't think the humans took that the same way the vampires did. Anyway, then comes the honeymoon. Bella decides to hold off on being turned until after the honeymoon, but now her and Edward can finally be physical with their relationship. The two share a night of passion, Edward basically destroys the room. Not only does the room take a beating, but Bella too is injured, and Edward decides it's not safe for them to have sex until she is turned. But Bella keeps trying, and the lady gets what the lady wants. Until she eventually realizes that she is pregnant. Something that no one in the Cullen family thought to be possible. The baby is half-vampire, so birthing it will most likely kill Bella. From there it's mostly just sitting around the Cullen house, discussing what to do next. While that happens, Jacob leaves the Wolf Pack to protect Bella and her unborn child, and upon the baby being born, he imprints (werewolf love-at-first-sight thing) on the baby. Jacob will now do anything to protect the baby, even fight the entire Wolf Pack. Bella appears to have died in child birth, but directly before the credits, we find that she has turned.

So yea, spoilers up there. But then again, not many people care about the series, and most people have heard what happens anyway, so whatever. Yet again, this film is a type of metaphor for real-world problems. It also has many problems for fantasy worlds. It deals with the possibility of death from child birth, once again the whole love triangle thing, how far people go for friendship, and how Bella will not be able to see her family after she turns. This movie was surprisingly emotional, even knowing that Bella survives and is turned, it was truly suspenseful watching her die. I'll say this again, give the Twilight series a chance.

Rating: 8/10

Discussion topic: It wasn't exactly discussed in this movie, but do you think abortion is ever acceptable?
