Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, Alan Arkin. These four people together in a movie should make one of the greatest comedies of the year. But do they? Sadly the answer to that question is no. So the basic plot of this film is that Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) is bullied as a kid, and given a magic kit for his birthday. Amazed by it, he starts working on some tricks and shows off at school, Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) offers some advice, and Burt asks Anton to be his partner. In the years to come, they become very popular, and even have a show in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, their act doesn't change at all for the 10 years they stay in this theater, and fewer and fewer people buy the tickets. At the same time, Stave Gray (Jim Carrey) is running his own TV show "Brain Rape" and his magic is much more interesting than Wonderstone's magic, so Burt and Anton are fired. Burt goes on a spiritual journey of having no money and learning the themes of friendship while performing at a senior center, and Anton eventually returns for their next big trick.
Now, the acting in this film is superb, that's to be expected with this cast. But the writing could have used a little work, it was all too predictable. But moving past that, Jim Carrey's character was barely present. And Burt Wonderstone's character progression was a bit cheesy, and realistically would not have worked out the way it did. But it's a movie, so once again, I can get over it. When all of the characters get their shit together and pull off that final, amazing, trick for the first time, it was beautiful. Alan Arkin truly brought that scene to life. Overall, not an amazing film, but it's pretty comedic. Maybe rent it when it comes out.
