The Croods (2013) [Movie Review]

Meet the worlds first modern family, the Croods. The world is changing, and the Croods must evolve. They have to break every rule they have ever known, conquer every fear they have ever feared, and must put up with each other as they make their journey to higher ground.

The family set-up is typical to your average family of today, or at least average for families portrayed in TV/film. You have the three kids, the son will do anything their father says (Thunk - Clark Duke), the daughter who disobeys everything their father says (Eep - Emma Stone), and a baby (Sandy - Randy Thom) for comedic relief. The father (Grug - Nicolas Cage) who is strict, but does everything for the betterment of the family, the wife (Ugga - Catherine Keener) who is the voice of reason for the father, and the mother-in-law (Gran - Cloris Leachman) who the father hates. Eventually they meet Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who helps the Croods on their journey. Grug doesn't like that Guy is more evolved than him, and he really doesn't like that Eep has a crush on him.

So, as stated above, the family structure is one we see in almost every TV show or movie, granted it's a comedy. The animations in this movie were really good, and the 3D was actually great. It's nice to see the 3D technology being useful again. The voicing talents of Emma Stone, Nic Cage, Clark Duke, and Cloris Leachman were amazing. The others got almost no lines, but these four did a great job. Every time something dangerous happened, Grug would count out his family members, getting more and more excited until he got to six and immediately lost all enthusiasm (Gran being the sixth member). At one point in time, he did something because he thought it would kill her. I'm honestly surprised this kind of comedy is allowed in a kids' movie. They're trying to ban words like "nigger" in period pieces, and "faggot" in movies about homosexuality, and those are typically movies made for adults. I'm not saying it's bad, I think people need to calm down and stop censoring everything, I'm just saying it's surprising that it's not frowned upon yet. Overall The Croods wasn't amazing, but wasn't bad. If you have kids, or enjoy kids movies, you might like this. If you don't, you will probably hate it.

Rating: 6/10
