Spring Breakers (2013) [Movie Review]

Spring break... spring break... spring break forever... sounds nice, right? That's what our four girls in Spring Breakers thought too, but you can't party forever. Can you?

So, Spring Breakers follows the craziness that follows four girls on their spring break. Our four girls are Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine). Friends since kindergarten, then decide that they want to have an amazing spring break. Only problem is that they don't have enough money, so it seems like the trip will be called off. But then Candy, Brit, and Cotty get a brilliant idea to rob a restaurant, and thus their expenses are covered. Faith is a little too Christian to partake in illegal activities, but doesn't seem too hurt about what happened after she is informed. While on spring break, they meet "Alien" (James Franco) who later bails them out of jail. After the jail incident, Faith decides to call it quits and heads home. Now Candy, Brit, and Cotty work with Alien, helping him with his not-so-legal business. Shortly after, one of Alien's enemies pays him a visit and hurts one of our girls. This angers Alien, and he sets out to get revenge.

Now, this movie was a treat for the eye, but a wreck for the brain. For starters, it's non-linear, if you aren't paying attention, you will get lost in what's happening. What's more, the editing makes you want to leave the theater. Every transition begins with the sound of a gun cocking. I'm not exaggerating that, it is literally every transition. Sometimes multiple. The same sound effect, probably 30 times in the 90 minutes. Another annoyance is every time a character says something, don't worry if you miss it! They'll play it at least 3 more times to ensure you understand what they said! And, since it's spring break, everyone has cameras to record this historic event. But I guess everyone who has a camera just stole their parents' from 20 years ago, because not one of them had good quality picture.

But then again, the main reason many of the viewers will be seeing this is because of the, uh, plot. So, whatever.

I think the idea of this film was great, but the editing ruined the entire thing. Oh well, fun to look at, but not worth the money. I'd give this one a pass.

Rating: 5/10

Discussion topic: Would you let your friend(s) do something illegal to pay for something you will be part of, but wouldn't have to do said illegal activity?
